Faig ahmed Exhibition Hall

Faig Ahmed is an internationally recognized contemporary visual artist from Baku, Azerbaijan best known for his surrealist weavings which integrate visual distortions into traditional oriental rugs. His work reimagines ancient crafts and creates new visual boundaries by physically interpreting the deconstruction of traditions and stereotypes. His process involves computers and engineering paper, but the weaving process is the same as it was 300 years ago. All threads are wool or silk and are dyed with natural colors.

We designed a space based off of the threads of his rugs. Our group wanted to make you feel like you were being pulled by a string. To incorporate this art piece that flows through the interior, we designed to be seating and a place for information.

When you first walk into the space you are greeted by a red pavilion housing a middle "knot of thread" creates a gathering space for visitors to explore through.

To encourage all ages to attend the exhibit, we created a dome-shaped kinesthetic room. As you lay on rugs while the floor (virtually) slips away, a continuous video is played in black and white to focus on the structure of patterning, an important topic to Faig.

This exhibition hall not only houses Faig Ahmed's impressive art installations, it creates a space for his pieces to come alive through the architecture of a rug.
